This project focused on designing a newspaper for Maxfield elementary. The content for the newspaper was provided by a journalism class at Bethel University, who paired with a group of students from Maxfield Elementary, to create content written by students for students.

I wanted the focus of this newspaper to be on the students of Maxfield, because it’s their paper so they should be able to see what they worked so hard for. I also wanted the content to be very neatly laid out. The color scheme of each spread is sourced from the photos used there. The articles were also on the shorter side so I took advantage of being able to use larger photos in the spreads.

The final design ended up with a lot of larger photos rather than smaller ones. The larger photos showcase the story better and put an emphasis on the people involved. The newspaper is created with all one typeface family which unifies all of the text elements together. The colors of each spread being sourced from the photos also help to bring the spread together. Each spread is also set up in a similar way but no two are set up identically, showing the variation between the spreads.
